Our History

The Compassionate Friends was founded in 1969 in England by two families whose children died in the same hospital. The hospital chaplain, Rev. (later Canon) Simon Stevens helped the two families meet and he and the parents decided to find ways to help each other survive their loss. After their initial meeting, they arranged to meet with other bereaved parents. The organization spread throughout the UK and was developed in the USA around 1971.

The Jackson, MS Chapter of TCF was founded in 1978 by Chuck Prestwood who had lost his young daughter, Krissy. Chuck served as chapter leader and newsletter editor for five years. The Jackson Chapter is one of the longest running chapters in the USA and one of the few chapters which continues to print and mail a monthly newsletter as well as send some online. Our newsletter is in its 39th year of publication. Our chapter has been meeting monthly at Fondren Presbyterian Church, 3220 Old Canton Road, Jackson, MS since 1980. Our chapter offers a lending library of grief-related books and materials which are available at our monthly meetings. We are connected to Contact the Crisis Line who answers the phone for us 24/7 by trained and qualified phone counselors.

We appreciate our many volunteers, past and present, who have contributed of their time and talents to fill each vital role that is so necessary to keep our chapter running. Each person is sincerely appreciated for all you do in remembrance of your child/children.

A special note of thanks to those who send the much-needed donations in memory of your precious children. We would not be here as a chapter without each one willingly and lovingly supporting our chapter in any way. Your encouragement, compassion, sharing, hugs and personal dedication and commitment to each other and to our group does not go unnoticed. We are so grateful to each one who has helped in so many ways throughout the years!
